James Stewart Actor, War Hero,Philanthropist.....
James was his screen name, but we always call him Jimmy.
Jimmy Stewart was born in a small town in Pennsylvania. His father owned a hardware store and always expected his only son to run it someday.
Little Jimmy worked at the store from the time he was 10, but while he was at Princeton University, he got the acting bug. That took him to Broadway and eventually to Hollywood.
During his 55 year career he appeared in 80 films, many of the considered movie classics today. He was nominated five times for an Academy Award, winning once for Best Actor.
In 1941 he entered the Air Force. He served for over four years, first as a flying instructor, then as a pilot of B-24 bombers. He led his squadron on more than 20 missions over Germany. After the war he continued to be active in the Air Force Reserve and achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
Among his medals are the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Groix de Guerre from the French Air Force.
At the age of 41 he married Gloria McLean. They raised four children and were married for almost 45 years until her death.
Besides serving as an elder in his church, he and Gloria were involved in many philanthropic activities through the years. Both animal lovers they devoted time and money for animal welfare projects.
Jimmy Stewart made many appearances on Johnny Carson’s show. On one show he read this poem, “A Dog Named Beau.”
