22 Pictures Of Victorians Acting Silly Instead Of Sad
The Victorian age wasn't the best time to party.
Pictures usually took hours to finish, so by the time the cameras were ready, Victorians were hardly in the mood to smile. But despite the frowns, this stoic bunch secretly liked to loosen their collars from time to time, as these rare photos suggest.
2. Bra size: double teas.
3. This woman is not infected with the plague, she's just taking a silly one for this year's Christmas card.
4. These dresses might be a little too short for a respectable woman of the Victorian era, but luckily for us, these are dudes.
5. It's weird to think that due to limited nutrition, these people were probably all, like, four feet tall.
6. Can't tell if he's saving her or...
7. It's hard not to be giggly while wearing those tiny little hats.
8. This makes me want to direct an indie Victorian rom-com.
9. Smiles upon smiles upon frilly dresses upon smiles.
10. Were people at any point like, "Can we wear at least two fewer layers of clothing at the beach? Just two?"
11. That's a little better! Also, the guy on the right looks like his nickname might be Moose.
12. Given the amount of time it took photos to get full exposure back, it's safe to say this girl's face stayed like that forever.
13. Katy Perry's "California Girls" video ain't got nothing on these chicks.
14. Okay, for a second I thought she was in a coffin.
15. Every kid's hat game was on point back then.
16. And yet most of them were cool with just wearing pillow cases.
17. Does anyone have a time machine? I think I just fell in love.
18. This is as close to a Victorian selfie as it's going to get.
19. Mom and daughter enjoying the golden age of ribbons and hats.
20. I don't think any slicker-looking guy has ever lived.
21. That's the spirit! Take off your creepy witch shoes and enjoy the tide!
22. Jumping for joy, or levitating with wizard powers?
So despite it commonly being characterized by a man becoming aghast as his monocle cracks, the Victorian Age was secretly one of fun and merriment. Even in a time of poor medicine and a depressing lack of child labor laws, people still found ways to turn up.
